As the dates on my photographs indicate, I haven't been doing this seriously long. However, I did spend a few years in art school, and, though I make my living writing, I've always believed I'd return to visual art eventually. I've owned and toyed with manual cameras most of my adult life, so it was inevitable that, one day, I'd pick up one of those cameras and do something deliberate with it. The result was a show, in the summer of 2001, of photographs from trips taken to the Southwest and Pacific Northwest. When I began the project, I thought I was setting out to take pictures of mountains and forests and the like. But it was less interesting, and much less rewarding, than I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, I still admire the great nature photographers, but it just wasn't for me. An offer of a show in December of 2001 forced me figure out what might suit me better, and then to get serious fast. The White Women series resulted from that frenetic time.
