bio

Born in 1956 and raised in a suburb of Chicago, her formative art training didn't begin until after she, her husband and child relocated to Cincinnati where she began instruction at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1984. Portrait painting consumed much of her time during her early years at the Art Academy with Joanne's pastel and oil paintings commissioned for restaurants and individuals throughout the Greater Cincinnati Area. In 1986, her work was accepted into the Kansas City Pastel Society's 3rd Annual Exhibition.

In 1989, she received a First Year Honors Scholarship to continue her studies full time at the Academy. During that next year, description and abstraction studies provided the framework to describe the differences she witnessed between the jet polluted trees around O'Hare Airport in Chicago and those in Cincinnati. By studying Monet, Van Gogh and Matisse, she continued exploring "treescapes" with color combinations of Impressionism and Fauvism. Throughout her last year at the academy she was the chief curator for the Art Academy Gallery, graduating Magnum Cum Laude in December 1993, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and Class Valedictorian.

From 1991 to 1994, she displayed her work in numerous exhibitions in the Cincinnati area including Art on the Square in May 1994, and her first solo show in August 1994, at Seasongood Nature Center, Woodland Mound Park. She received the First Place Purchase Award at the First Annual Tri-State Spring Color Paint Out at the Wilks' Pyramid Hill Estate in Hamilton, Ohio in 1993 , Honorary Mention at the Second Annual Tri-state Spring Color Paint-Out in 1994 and Second Place Purchase Award at the Third Annual Tri-State Spring Color Paint Out in 1995. Her paintings have been displayed at the Cincinnati Offices of Senator DeWine and many of her paintings continue to tour and have been sold with the CINergy Collection, from 1995 to 1999.

In the spring of 1996, Joanne studied in Paris, finding every work of Monet's that Paris had to offer, including a tour of his home, garden and water lily pond in Giverny. Joanne is currently concentrating with an impasto oil brushstroke in the style of the impressionists' plein-air, capturing what the camera cannot. Her paintings extend the image to reflect the feeling of being out in the open; nature is continuous.

She has recently printed her first limited edition lithograph, Tomahawk Summer, with a Lake Waynoka sponsor, which has also won Honorary Mention from the Behringer-Crawford Museum.
