The Associate Principal Librarian will work with the Principal Librarian to provide for the day-to-day functioning of the library and must be able to work in a leadership role when necessary. He or she should be able to work closely with the Music Director, musicians, staff, conductors, guest artists. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) librarians also provide library services for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra (CPO), Cincinnati May Festival, and Cincinnati Opera.
Employment will commence on a mutually agreed date, however, the opening is
immediate.
The Associate Librarian will:
- Prepare music for CSO/CPO performances. Responsibilities include,
but are not limited to: the preparation of parts with the conductor's master
score; preparation of bar numbers and/or rehearsal letters, adds cuts,
editing and inserts, repairing deteriorating parts and scores, the
preparation of extra parts as needed.
- Work with the Principal Librarian in managing the schedule and work
of the Assistant Principal Librarian, bow markers and volunteer staff.
- Assemble and prepare orchestra folders for concert programs
including program sheets and cue sheets (including excerpted music for
education/family concerts) and prepare sign-out sheets for musicians.
- Prepare instrumentation charts.
- Verify content of rental music received from publishers with regard
to accuracy of packing lists and usability of materials. Responsible for
packing shipping rental materials to sources on a timely basis.
- Check contents of purchased music materials with regard to accuracy
of the score and packing list. Prepares new sets, including stamping and
numbering of parts and scores. Verify errata for new materials. Catalogue
new sets and ads to the catalog database and OPAS.
- Update the performance information/instrumentation sheets in the
music catalog of the CSO collection and update OPAS performance history and
instrumentation records from all CSO/CPO performances. Send timely reports
to ASCAP and BMI.
- Maintain the CSO music collection and catalogue, as well as the
CSO/CPO performance database both in OPAS and hard copy. Provide assistance
and support to all staff members with OPAS inquiries and/or with OPAS
training.
- Perform concert and rehearsal duties as directed by the Principal
Librarian, including smooth functioning of the library, placement of music
and conductor scores on stands, and provide assistance to the conductors,
musicians, and staff with problems concerning music.
- Facilitate respectful relationships within the Library and among the
orchestra, conductors, staff, music publishers and rental agencies.
- Maintain an inventory of office supplies, including paper, folders
and other library specific supplies.
- Manage complete projects including concert preparation for specific
CSO/CPO subscription, education, opera, May Festival concerts as well as
budgeting, recording and TV projects as designated by the Principal
Librarian. This includes procuring music, rental agreements and all music
preparation for the orchestra, choruses and soloists.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times, especially with respect to
artistic planning .
- Work flexible and late hours and travel with the orchestra,
including airline travel and tours as designated by the Principal Librarian.
- Additional duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate music degree required and experience as a
full time Orchestra Librarian preferably in a professional orchestra.
- Must demonstrate initiative, ability to work
independently, strong problem resolution and organizational skills, and be
able to succeed in a fast-paced environment. Must have superb interpersonal
skills for working with the Music Director, conductors, musicians, staff,
volunteers, and audience members.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, ability to work
in a leadership role when necessary.
- Familiarity with budgeting procedures.
- Affinity for performing detailed and accurate work.
- Ability to read/write music in different clefs and
transpositions, transcribe parts, copy orchestra parts legibly and quickly
using manuscript and computer notation software.
- Thorough knowledge of orchestral literature, foreign
terms, musical terms and signs (including bow markings) and contemporary
notation.
- Knowledge of current score editions and reference
sources, in order to meet the highest scholarly standards.
- Must have thorough knowledge of copyright laws in the
U.S. and knowledge/familiarity with music licensing agencies.
- Experience with, and knowledge of, orchestral pops
repertoire and sources.
- Must demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Windows,
Word, Excel, Access, OPAS.
- Previous experience in staff management and working
with library budgets preferred.
- Previous experience as OPAS manager preferred.
SALARY:
Scale (excluding EMG). Media services paid at applicable AF of M
rates, when worked.
